How to Find a Photographer that is Right for You

Thinking about getting photos taken? First step is finding a photographer that fits your style. The best place to start is with research via the power of Google and a little ‘window shopping’ on Instagram and Pinterest, but that probably goes without saying. What you may need support with, however, is insight on what to consider and compare as you start your photographer search. And that’s where I can help as not only a photographer but also someone who regularly seeks them out for my family.

So here are some important things to consider as you search for a photographer that is right for you.

Determine your desired PHOTO STYLE - Are you a traditionalist that is looking for more posed, eyes-to-the-camera type of photos? Or do you gravitate towards a more candid, documentary photo style? There is no wrong answer! It truly comes down to your personal preference so that you can find a photographer that matches your style and vibe. This is why ‘window shopping’ a photographer’s work is so important.

Be in-tune with EDITING STYLES - Photographers typically have an editing style that will align with their branding and use it consistently for work recognition. Different editing styles include bold and colorful, dark and moody, clean and natural, and soft and muted. As you are determining your preferred photo style (see tip above), also pay attention to the photographer’s editing style.

Pay attention to your EMOTIONS - This is a big one! As you look at a photographer’s gallery of client work, simply be aware of your feelings. If you are having those ‘tug at your heart’ moments looking at photos of OTHER kids and families, then just imagine the reaction you’ll have when those photos are of your own.

All about location, LOCATION, location - Avoid falling in love with a photographer that is geographically incompatible by including “near <enter location>” during your web searches. While most photographers are willing to travel, the mileage outside of a specific range and/or airfare would be an added expense. Some photographers, however, plan photo shoots during their vacation travels so it never hurts to inquire or simply give them a social media follow.

Identify your BUDGET - The total investment and cost structure between photographers can vary wildly for a similar type of photo session for a variety of reasons. It is important to identify the ‘all-in’ cost that you are able and willing to invest for the specific photo session you are seeking, and then pay close attention to the package inclusion details (see below tip). Why did I use descriptors like ‘total’ investment and ‘all-in’ cost? Because some photographers market a photo session fee and then the digital image files and/or prints are an additional post-session expense. Some photographers provide a fixed number of digital image files in their package, with the option to then purchase the remaining photos from the session. Some photographers offer styling support like hair, make-up and wardrobe rentals as part of their services for an added expense. So knowing your total budget will help as you evaluate photographers.

Compare photo session PACKAGE INCLUSIONS - This is another big one… Similar to price, how a photographer operates his/her business varies and it’s important that you take the time to understand the package inclusions. Details like photo session type (studio vs. on-location), photo session length of time, number of digital images provided and if they are included, number of prints/merchandise and if they are included, client styling services and even the type of pre-session support are all types of operational differences. Determining what is important to you will help as you compare area photographers that align with your desired photo style.

What are the photo TURNAROUND times - The turnaround time likely varies depending on the time of the year for the photographer, but it is important to understand the estimated time to have your final photos. Most photographers communicate 2-4 week turnaround times for standard high school senior or family photography.

Know your PHOTO RIGHTS - I know this seems like a wild concept. You are paying for the service, so probably expect to be able to print and post the photos as you choose, but every photographer is different and at the end of the day you need to make sure you understand your rights to the photos taken. So PSA, read the contract or ask questions before you book the session. Most photographers will provide their clients with a Print Release timed with the transfer of any digital photo files. The Print Release is a legal document that provides the client with the legal rights to print photos and share photos for their personal use, while granting the photographer marketing rights and a copyright which prevents the photos from commercial use.

Seek out customer TESTIMONIALS - Whether it’s direct word-of-mouth, a Google Business Review or an excerpt from the photographer’s website, understanding the direct experiences and feedback from others can be a powerful deciding factor, especially if you are torn between a few different photographers. Chances are you already check-out reviews for restaurants or before ordering a product online, so with an investment as important as this I would encourage you to do the same.

BRAND vibe check - At the end of the day, the transactional goods being sold are photos. And loving the output is the most important. But the photographer is operating a business and soliciting a service that will require you to spend some time together - at the bare minimum, the length of the photo shoot. After spending time on the photographer’s website and social media accounts, consider if your personality and values align with those of the photographers. If they do, a giant bonus! It’s like it’s meant to be. And if they don’t, just reflect and ask yourself if those differences will jeopardize the comfort and output of the photos.

The list could go on and on, but for me, these are the most important considerations to help you find a photographer that is the best fit for you.
